Normal rain at Huntsville, inches per month. December is the wettest month, not spring, and it lands right after the leaves come down. Figures are the National Weather Service's 1991-2020 normals. See what the local weather means for gutters.

How it works

  1. Describe the house

Call or send the form with the street or area, what's wrong or what you want, and how many stories the house has.

  2. One contractor receives it

Your request is passed to a single independent contractor working in the Huntsville area. It isn't sold to a list.

  3. They give you a price

The contractor contacts you, looks at the eaves and downspouts, and puts their own price and scope in writing.

  4. The decision is yours

Hire them or don't. The contract, permits, schedule, payment and warranty are between you and the contractor.

Pros is part of this site's name, but the site has no crews. It makes the introduction and nothing more.

Gutter work around Huntsville

Each guide below is written for a homeowner in the Huntsville area, with numbers tied to a named source and a date.

Gutter installation

New gutters on a house that has none, or a first full system after a remodel. The guide covers seamless and sectional runs, K-style and half-round shapes, 5-inch and 6-inch sizes, metal thickness, hanger spacing and what a sound written quote should spell out, with every price labeled by source and date.

Gutter repair

Sagging runs, dripping joints, loose downspouts and overflow that shows up only in hard rain. The guide sorts out which problems are a quick fix and which point to something bigger, such as rotted fascia, too few outlets or a gutter too small for the roof above it. A national repair range is included and labeled.

Gutter replacement

When a full swap beats another patch: age, rust, repeated repairs or a damaged seamless run that can't be patched. It covers removing the old system, fascia and drip edge checks while the gutter is down, and the chance to resize. Published lifespans and removal prices are listed with their sources and dates.

Gutter guards

Mesh, micro-mesh, reverse curve, foam, brush and screen each have a real limit, and none of them ends cleaning altogether. The guide lists those limits type by type, published prices and where they conflict, the roof warranty question, and what to ask before paying for a guard on a house with heavy leaf or needle fall.

Downspouts and drainage

Where the water lands matters as much as the gutter above it. The guide covers outlet spacing, downspout size math, the 5-foot discharge guidance, splash blocks, extensions, buried lines and pop-up emitters, plus who to call in Huntsville, Madison or the county when drainage involves a neighbor, a street or a low spot.

Gutter cleaning

How often to clean depends on the trees overhead and whether guards are on. Published guidance runs from once or twice a year to four times near pines. The guide also explains why the fall leaf drop and Huntsville's wet December make late fall worth planning around, and what published cleaning prices look like by story.

Planning guides

Gutter size calculator

Many guides print a single square-foot limit for a 5-inch gutter, and that figure hides the rain rate behind it. This guide runs the math on Huntsville's own NOAA numbers for one 40-foot eave, shows where a 5-inch run falls short, and includes a calculator for your own eave measurements and roof pitch.

What gutters cost

One national guide averages about $3,200 for a house with about 200 feet of gutter, while others land between $1,135 and $1,984. This page lists those figures with their dates, along with per-foot prices by material, repair, removal, guards, cleaning and fascia. None of them is a Huntsville contractor's price, and your written quote is what counts.

Hiring a gutter contractor

Most of what you're paying for on a gutter job is hard to see from the street: trough size, metal thickness, hanger spacing. The guide covers who does this work, which questions to ask about each run, what a written contract should show, which office handles permits for your address, and the state's warning about payment.

Huntsville rain, storms and soil

Normal rain here is 54.29 inches a year, and December is the wettest month. This page collects National Weather Service normals, NOAA rain rates, freeze dates, storm seasons, soil descriptions, karst and hillside drainage notes, with the limits of each source stated plainly, so you can see what your gutters have to handle.

Hail and wind damage

After a storm, start with your insurance agent and your policy, not a knock on the door. The guide covers cosmetic damage language, hail deductibles, receipts, and the state's warnings about home repair fraud. Whether dented gutters are covered depends on your policy, and a contractor can't decide that. It also lists where to report fraud.

What drives the cost

Published national guides don't agree. This Old House (updated October 2026) puts a full install on a typical 2,000-square-foot home (about 200 feet of gutter) at $600 to $5,800, averaging $3,200. Bob Vila (June 2023), using HomeAdvisor data, gives $622 to $1,677, averaging $1,135, without stating a length. No Huntsville contractor's price was collected for this site. Your number is the written quote for your house.

Putting off upkeep has a price of its own. HomeAdvisor says water damage to soffit and fascia is "typically caused by clogged gutters or poor roof drainage" and costs $10 to $23 per foot, which is $400 to $920 along a 40-foot eave. It also lists dry rot repair at $500 to $4,000, while an average cleaning runs $167, per Angi.

What changesWhy it moves the price
LengthMost published prices are per linear foot, so every eave counts

MaterialAluminum, vinyl and galvanized sit well below copper in every guide read
SizeAngi adds $3 to $5 per foot for 6-inch

Rotted fasciaHomeAdvisor lists $6 to $20 per foot for fascia and soffit work

The main choices

Most gutter decisions come down to these three. The installation guide goes through each one.

Seamless or sectional

Seamless is cut on site with fewer joints, and This Old House gives it 20 to 30 years against 10 to 15 for sectional. The catch: if a small seamless section can't be patched, the whole run usually gets replaced, according to HomeAdvisor.

5-inch or 6-inch

Sources point to 44%, 50% or 67% more capacity for 6-inch. At Huntsville's rain rates, the length of each run and the number of downspouts decide it, not house size alone. Run your eave through the calculator.

Metal and thickness

Aluminum won't rust and comes in many colors. Stores tend to stock 0.019 to 0.025 inch, and contractors 0.027 or 0.032. Galvanized steel rusts after about 20 to 25 years. Copper is sold by ounces and lasts about 50 years, per HomeAdvisor.

Common questions

Do gutters need a permit in Huntsville?

No agency page read for this site answers that either way. Huntsville's FAQ sets a general trigger of work "in excess of $250 dollars" and doesn't name gutters. It also says: "When in doubt, call the Inspection Department 256-427-5331." The hiring guide lists the other offices.

Is 5-inch gutter enough here?

It depends on each run. In the worked example, a level 5-inch gutter on a 40-foot eave barely clears Huntsville's 10-year rain rate and falls short of the 100-year rate. A second downspout clears both rates. A 6-inch clears the 100-year rate only if it's also pitched.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

Angi's cleaning guide gives one to two times a year on average, two or more near oaks, four near pines, and at least once even with guards. See gutter cleaning.

Will my insurance pay for dented gutters?

That depends on your policy. Call your agent first, and read the policy for cosmetic damage language and your hail deductible. A contractor can't decide coverage. See hail and wind damage.

Who does the actual work?

One independent local contractor. This site passes your request along and does no gutter work itself. The price, contract, permits and warranty are yours to settle with the contractor.
